lessons and whispers

One person's hard time is not necessarily someone else's.  Likewise what is a big blessing to one may be less significant to another.  I remember when we went to Israel.  It had been my lifelong, literally, dream to go there and I LOVED it. It was an amazing trip and I think back to it often.  Rob describes it as life-changing. He felt like his testimony really grew having been there in person.  I didn't.  This does not make my experience less than his, just different. The thing is you never know what someone is walking thru, what might really touch them, what might make them sad or glad.  This is why we must always be as kind as possible.  This is also why we plan FHE lessons, YW classes and activities, temple trips, and quiet conversations.  This is why we never ignore an impulse to do something good, or pay a compliment, or give a smile.  You never know when something will lift and strengthen another.

My driving devotionals have often become times of testimony growing for me.  As I listen to conference, or a pod cast on a gospel topic, I often will feel the spirit warmly testifying to me that Jesus is my Savior, and that He knows and loves me.  I am so grateful for those quiet witnesses.  Sometimes I find myself driving with tears on my face as I am filled with gratitude.
Two days this week I listened to Follow Him with John Bytheway and Hank Smith.  They had John Hilton 3 as their guest.  One thing they talked about ways to find the Lord in the delay.  When righteous desires or promised blessings seem to not be coming what do we do?  How do we not only hold on to faith but actual grow it?  As they talked and shared scriptural and personal insights I thought of Ethan, and the many other covid missionaries (Spencer and others) who have served in ways, and for amounts of time, and in places, that are very different than they expected.  Ethan was called to Madrid.  For 16 months he served in SLC, during that delay he put his whole heart into serving where he was, lifting where he stood, trusting in the Lords timing, and remaining cheerful and optimistic. This is a great example of finding God in the delay.  I have a few friends who have wished for an eternal marriage, or for children, and who have not been blessed with those things for many years (or ever).  I have had many friends who have wished for a kind and righteous husband and the comfort of a sweet and tender marriage but who are in marriages that are very different than that, a different kind of delay.  I have friends with children who are not living good lives, despite having loving and good parents, delay.  I could go on and on.  I feel very confident that we all actually live “in the delay”most of the time.  Finding joy in the disappointments, in the uncomfortable, and the unfair, is an important eternal life skill.  We are immeasurably blessed not because of the things we enjoy and have thanks to a loving Father in Heaven but because there is a loving Heavenly Father.  It is enough that Jesus and Heavenly Father are.

This is good for me to remember as we struggle to figure out exactly what the next year will look like.  Where will we be, how will we be there?  There are pros and cons, challenges and risks, uncertainty and hope each way we turn and we have to muddle through and pick and pray for the best.  I hate that:)

Concert

Rob somehow came across this oldie but goodie! Oh how I loved this little Cub Scout!

Tonight we had our last concert of the year. It was so  good! Lettie and Kaylynn both got to conduct a number. The bands all did great and the music was upbeat!

Lettie, Grace and Mary

I love this picture. I love my Jesus, I wish I served Him better. I am grateful for his unending love.

Back at it

Louise got this cute fairy garden for me, and Sofia made this cute cup for me. The kids were glad I was back, I didn’t miss them, but I was happy to see them and we started our novel study so it was a fun day.
Grace had a jazz concert tonight. It was so good! Grace had a solo and did amazing!

Home

Our trip home was long. Not as long as Nana and Abbas. They have had the worst travel luck. On the way there their flight was cancelled after they were already on the plane and rescheduled for the next day. Luckily they had planned to fly out early and spend some time with Hannah and Ezra so they still arrived the day before the wedding. They left yesterday morning and when they got to DFW their connection was cancelled. It took hours to learn that they couldn’t fly out so they went to a hotel. This morning they got a call to come get their luggage but when they got there only Abba’s was there and they learned that while Nana’s luggage went on to Dayton they could not fly out until tomorrow. That’s a terrible travel day!

We had such a wonderful weekend. I always!!! ❤️❤️❤️spending time with the family and always wish we lived all together. The only problem with the big whole family weekend gathering is you don’t get enough one on one time with anyone. Or enough everyone together time. I hardly spent any time with this little smooch. Grandpa did get to run around with him a lot though so that was good.

And this little angel is so much bigger than she was in January but she’s still the sweetest.

When we got home we did laundry and put away suitcases and went to dinner, I had the stuffed plantains and they were delicious!

We got to talk to Elder Utzinger, who is doing great!

And we are ready for a new week!

Blessing day

Today was Darcy Ella’s blessing day. Clayton gave a beautiful, inspired blessing that was really nice.
After we all went to a Jenna’s for lunch and family fun.
I love my family💕💕   ...including Emma:)
The girls playing spot it
3 generations.  We should have grabbed Grandma for four (that was dumb)
cutest baby in the land
I left my purse on the row in front of me to save it and it stayed there all thru the meeting. I found a bunch of cute selfies on it! And some empty mint wrappers.

In the evening we went to visit Tanner.

The light of our lives.  These grands are beyond grand!  Rob and I both feel so blessed to have wonderful children, fabulous sons in law, and delightful grandchildren.

Wedding Day

Where are the words needed to describe what this day meant? I don’t have them, and I’m not sure they exist even on the tongues of writers far more eloquent than I. It was wonderful.

When your daughter gets married you cant help but reflect right back to the beginning, Sierra was the most beautiful baby. She was sweet and peaceful and easy. Born on Christmas morning she was the best gift I ever got. Raising her was a sweet and joyful experience. With all the children when I look back I am just so grateful for the honor of being their mom, so filled with happy memories, so mortified at the mistakes I made. The past is always colored with regrets. There are so may things I wish I had done differently, better. Sierra is bright, beautiful, a shining star. She has over come so much and as I think back not only am I so proud of her but I see so many places where I failed her. She rose above all that and is an angel girl. I am so grateful for her. I love her so very much and admire her strength, her courage, her joy. And her wedding day was so so lovely, just like her.

Being in the temple is a sacred, wonderful time. The bride’s room in the Payson temple is gorgeous. Sierra and I had a nice amount of time in there, just the two of us. She was radiant, I loved seeing her so sure of her choice, so peaceful about her life and love, so whole and good and it felt like I got a glimpse, an inkling of, a lifting of the veil moment of, eternity. It was perfect.
The weather outside was cold. Windy, overcast, but not raining so we were grateful!
A huge crowd of loved ones was gathered outside the doors of the temple to greet the new Mr & Mrs Brown. We took pictures until it was too cold and we couldn’t take any more then we headed to the church for the luncheon.

There was plenty of delicious food and punch and cheesecake. Sierra and Chris didn’t want any of the traditional reception things so it was just a time to eat, visit, enjoy each other’s company. There were tons of people there (even though it was a “small” immediate family plus a couple of the couples closest friends only event) and after the reception was over and we had cleaned up we stayed and played games.
This is a family picture…not a good perfect one for sure, but filled with the people I love.

After the bride and groom left (they are off to Hawaii!) we cleaned up, again with a huge amount of help from Chris’ friends, and then went to Danis.

Everyone hung out, we played the cereal box game, we talked, the kids ran around. We ordered pizza and Chinese food and enjoyed each other’s company.

I love eternal families and am so so so grateful for mine!

Travel day

We flew to Utah. Our flight was good, we had the usual preflight stresses but we made it on time and the flight made it safely. Once we were here it off to the races. When we come to Utah there is always so much to do, so many people to see, it’s always a whirlwind.
Our first stop was Cafe Rio. Then we had wedding errands to do on the way to Spanish. Finally we got to Dani’s.
Everyone went to Nana and Abba’s hotel to swim. It was so fun watching the little kids jump in and play in the water!
Maddie had her bridal shower that evening so all the women went. It was a lot of fun. The games were so funny to watch and participate in! It was just nice.
Before swimming  we squeezed in time for mani/pedis.
At 9pm, after all that, we went over to the church to decorate and get as much set up as we could. Chris’ family came too. Chris has a lot of really good friends. Many of them can to help as well. It was really great to see them all weekend, they were so helpful and made the whole wedding weekend go by so smoothly. Any stress I had quickly went away as I realized they were going to pitch in and do the work that was there…without even being asked.

Eventually we went to bed:)

A day late…

So it’s April and somehow we missed the boat on getting bday gifts for the girls this year. So we decided to throw a very merry un-birthday party for everyone and it was super fun. Cayley brought all the supplies and decorated! It was super cute. She got delicious cake and chocolate covered strawberries and pineapple sprite. We had a photo booth, pin the horn on the unicorn and charades. Each girl brought a gift and they exchanged them. I think everyone had so much fun!

So I guess I could have titled it “alls well that ends well”.

Birthday

Todays my birthday. I’m 54. That’s surreal.

I worked, my friend Louise spilled the beans that today was my bday so the kids wished me a happy birthday and I got lots of hugs throughout the day!

When I got home we went to Bahama Breeze for dinner. Grace and I did her ASL homework. She had to watch videos of people telling stories and then answer questions about the story. It was fun (for me) and I remembered some of the sign language I learned long ago.

We got to talk to Ethan. He had an apartment full of missionaries and they all said Happy Birthday! I got to talk to mom and dad, and all the girls. Jenna and I had a nice long chat, which was the best! In a perfect world I’d talk to each of my kids for 30-60 minutes a day;) Her house is busy and her duties are many and it’s always fun for me to peek in and see how life is going! When she called she was holding Darcy, not much later the sweet baby got a little cranky so J put her down for a nap. Then she walked around the house picking up stuff from each room. She found a surprise flood in the bathroom and got that mopped up then moved on to the kitchen when suddenly there was a noise. Back to the bathroom “we” went and there was Cora.

Jenna “what are you doing?”

Cora “making a flood”

Jenna “remember you’re not allowed to do that”

Cora “it just a little one.”

Ruby (coming in from outside) “mom, my worm died.

Offers dead worm up for inspection.

Me “they are so cute!”

Jenna sigh

Or something near that.

Today is also Greg’s birthday. We exchanged birthday greetings:

What did you do today? Worked.

What did you do today? Worked.

Good chat, Happy Birthday!

Or something kind of near that. We mostly talked about the upcoming wedding and the plans that are coming together not so smoothly.

Change

Oh boy, the one thing that is always constant is that there is always change in life. Challenges and joys come and go. Children grow up, seasons change, friends move, health challenges come, go, stay, it’s always something. Here’s my life tip: enjoy right now, soak it up. Don’t wish for the past (easy to do), long for the future and it’s imagined perfection (easy to do), just be present. Love who’s with you, enjoy where are you, be grateful for the miracles and help you have during hard times, relish that joys of the day. Do now the best you can and Trust in the Lord with all your heart (like the way I worked the 2022 youth theme in there;) )

Rob got the job at Pax. He’ll be moving in a few weeks. Grace and I will stay in Florida until she’s done with school. This was an agonizing decision. There were no perfect solutions. Grace really doesn’t want to move, as all high schoolers don’t. But right before her senior year is particularly brutal. Plus if she graduates from a Florida high school she will earn the Bright Futures scholarship. Her GPA, SAT, and service hours entitle her to full tuition at any Florida State school and she wants to go to school here. So we begin a new chapter. Military families do it all the time, and we have had friends who have done it as well so I’m sure it will be fine. Maybe when she’s 18 and much closer to graduation we will have her stay with a family here for the last couple months. Nothing is off the table we’ll see how l everything works out.

We had our camp fundraiser last night. It went well, it was tons of work. We threw a breakfast for dinner and an Easter egg hunt for the ward. It was successful, people came, the girls cooked, eggs were hunted. While we were setting up in the morning Cora called and told me that she had gone to an Easter egg hunt and didn’t get any eggs! This was the saddest thing ever. I told the girls, who agreed that it was wrong on every level and we decided to get more eggs so that everyone could find lots! (So off to Walmart we went again)
The bunny found Grace! He brought her some cute clothes and some candy.

Church was really nice. I found out that my friend Janice is moving with her family to California in June. We will miss them something awful. She’s been the ward RS president for awhile and I love serving with her in ward council and around the ward. She’s amazing.
We got to talk to Ethan this afternoon. We had a ham dinner. Now it’s raining & tomorrow is another week!

Optimism

After dinner Rob and I went to Jeremiah’s. Grace was at band. Yesterday he took her to the doctor. This year, with me teaching, he has had to go to more doctor appointments than he’s been to in the last 24 years. Partly this is because Grace goes to more doctor appointments than all the other kids combined, and partly because I can’t take off. Every week it’s something new with that girl. She’s been suffering from an itchy rash, and also she’s been throwing up after eating. So off they went. Now we are adding allergist and GI to our future schedule, and a psych evaluation, for some therapy. Which I think will be helpful. She needs to get some tools to help her deal with chronic pain and health issues.

I love this picture.
Look at this adorable little baby bunny!!!

This week has been interesting at work. We had a lockdown (someone (allegedly) brought a weapon on campus). We had a day of visiting drug dogs and K9 officers. (Surprise they found some + a bonus find of ammo casings).

Last night, for mutual, we had our traditional conference challenge. Nicole brought an awesome snack table and I brought the questions and the youth won! It was really fun. Noisy and competitive and so much fun!
